STEEL CASTING QUALITY ASSURANCE

At Norton Cast we fully understand the importance of consistent quality. Each product is subject to stringent quality control standards before reaching final inspection.

Norton Cast Products is approved by Lloyds Register Quality Assurance to BS ISO 9001:2008. We hold a number of quality assurance accreditations.

Why steel casting quality matters

Poor steel casting quality can lead to:

  • Component failure in service
  • Increased machining costs
  • Safety risks (especially in load-bearing parts)
  • High scrap and rework rates

High quality steel casting ensures:

  • Longer service life
  • Better performance
  • Lower overall manufacturing cost

Factors that affect the quality of steel casting

  • Material Selection

Different alloys behave differently when molten
For example, cast iron flows well, but some steels are harder to cast cleanly

  • Mould Design & Quality

Poor mould design can cause turbulence or uneven cooling

  • Pouring Process

Temperature must be correct. Too hot leads to oxidation, gas absorption
Too cold results in incomplete filling

  • Cooling & Solidification

Uneven cooling causes internal stresses and defects
Controlled cooling improves grain structure and strength

  • Post-Processing

    Heat treatment can improve properties
    Machining removes surface defects
Cleaning removes residual sand or scale
